Getting The Most From Your Drywall Taping Tools
One of the most common types of damage we see on drywall taping tools is caused by INTERNAL CORROSION. That's Right! Often there is as much or more damage happening on the inside of the tool as there is on the outside from use and wear!
Why? Water content is quite different from area to area around the country. In the event your water has a particularly high mineral content (not bad for drinking), if your tool is allowed to soak in water for extended periods- more than a couple days- the combination of water and mud compound can become acidic and begin corroding aluminum parts on the inside of the tool.
The solution is quite simple. In the event you are not going to be using a particular tool for several days or more, flush it thoroughly with water. For automatic tapers, direct water alternately through the filler valve and then back into the chamber with the gate valve open. Do this several times and it will usually get most of the residual compound out of the chamber and keep your drywall tool away from corrosion's harm.
